In June 2025, 76-year-old Chen Mofen from Maoming, Guangdong Province, traveled to Jiaozuo Zhonghai TCM Cancer Hospital seeking conservative TCM treatment for her worsening gingival cancer. Prior to this, she had developed gingival swelling after a tooth extraction, and a biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of gingival squamous cell carcinoma. Due to her advanced age, she did not undergo surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, and only took 10 doses of Chinese herbal medicine locally with poor results. Her tumor continued to grow, pain intensified drastically, and her ability to eat and overall quality of life were severely impaired.
At the time of consultation, a cauliflower-like tumor, approximately 7×5 cm in size, was visible on her right lower gingiva, accompanied by marked swelling, pain and bleeding. She could only tolerate liquid food, and her condition was critical. After a detailed inquiry, Director Zhang of the hospital determined that despite her advanced age, the patient’s physical constitution was still adequate, leaving room for treatment. Drawing on the hospital’s extensive experience in treating oral and maxillofacial malignant tumors, Director Zhang formulated a TCM treatment plan for her: an empirical formula for gingival tumors, modified according to her symptoms, combined with Hua’ai Xiaoliu Powder.
To great surprise, only 10 days after starting the medication, Ms. Chen’s condition improved remarkably: the tumor on her right gingiva shrank significantly, facial swelling subsided completely, pain was eliminated, and she resumed a regular diet, no longer relying on liquid food alone. Her family expressed their excitement, saying, "We thought we would only be waiting out the days, but we never expected such excellent results from TCM. Now she can eat and speak without any trouble, and her spirits are much better than before!"
