Why does gastritis cause stomach cancer

November 29, 2023

Gastritis is an inflammation of the gastric mucosa, usually caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking. Although gastritis itself does not directly cause stomach cancer, it can increase the risk of stomach cancer. The main reasons for this increased risk include the following:

52

1. Chronic inflammation: Chronic gastritis may cause persistent inflammatory stimulation of the gastric mucosa, which can damage DNA and promote the growth of abnormal cells, thereby increasing the possibility of gastric cancer.

2. Helicobacter pylori infection: There is a certain link between this common cause of gastritis and gastric cancer. Although most H. pylori infections do not cause cancer, long-term infection may increase the risk of stomach cancer.

3. Nutrient absorption problems: Chronic gastritis may cause damage to the gastric mucosa function, affecting the normal digestion and nutrient absorption of food. This can lead to weight loss and a weakened body's immune system, further increasing the risk of cancer.

4. Chronic pain treatment: Some people with gastritis may use NSAIDs long-term to relieve pain and discomfort. However, the abuse of these drugs may have a negative impact on the gastric mucosa and increase the risk of cancer to a certain extent.

It’s important to stress that while there is a link between gastritis and stomach cancer, not everyone who has gastritis will develop stomach cancer. Regular checkups, aggressive treatment of chronic gastritis, following your doctor's recommendations to reduce risk, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle such as quitting smoking, limiting alcohol intake, and adopting healthy eating habits are all important steps to reduce the risk of stomach cancer.
