What is the cure rate for early liver cancer

April 07, 2023

Liver cancer is a malignant tumor. The cure rate for early-stage liver cancer is high, but as the disease progresses, the chance of cure gradually decreases. According to statistics, the cure rate for early-stage liver cancer is approximately between 60% and 80%, depending on different factors, such as the size, location, spread of the tumor, and the patient's overall health.

Early liver cancer usually refers to T1 and T2 liver cancer, that is, the tumor is less than 5 cm in diameter and has not spread to surrounding tissues or lymph nodes. In the early stages, the symptoms of liver cancer may not be obvious, making it difficult to detect, but through regular examinations and screenings, the detection rate of early liver cancer is gradually improving.

When patients are diagnosed with early-stage liver cancer, currently commonly used treatments include surgical resection, liver transplantation, radiofrequency ablation, and microwave ablation. Surgical resection, the most common treatment, eradicates cancer cells by removing the tumor and surrounding tissue. For patients with early-stage liver cancer, surgical resection usually yields better therapeutic results. According to research, the 5-year survival rate of surgical resection of early-stage liver cancer can reach 60% to 70%.

In addition to surgical resection, liver transplantation is also an effective treatment, especially for patients with early-stage liver cancer caused by cirrhosis. Liver transplant surgery allows a healthy liver to be transplanted to the patient to replace the cancerous liver. Liver transplantation has a high cure rate, and studies have shown that the 5-year survival rate of liver transplantation for early-stage liver cancer can exceed 70%.

In addition, radiofrequency ablation and microwave ablation are also common treatments for early-stage liver cancer. These two methods use high temperature or microwave energy to destroy cancer cells to achieve therapeutic effects. The cure rate of radiofrequency ablation and microwave ablation is slightly lower than surgical resection and liver transplantation, but it can still reach more than 50%.

It should be noted that the cure rate of early-stage liver cancer does not mean complete recovery, and patients still need follow-up follow-up and treatment. Liver cancer is highly recurrent and may reappear if you are not careful. Therefore, timely detection and treatment of recurrence through regular examination and monitoring are also the key to ensuring long-term survival of patients.

In summary, the cure rate for early-stage liver cancer ranges from 60% to 80%, depending on the size, location, spread of the tumor, and the patient's overall health. Early detection and appropriate treatment can effectively improve the cure rate. However, liver cancer is still a malignant tumor with a high degree of malignancy and recurrence rate, and patients require regular follow-up and monitoring after treatment to ensure disease control and long-term survival.
