The thyroid is a small gland located in the neck, and although its size in the body is negligible, its function is crucial. What are thyroid tumors?
Thyroid tumors are abnormal masses or tumors that form in the thyroid tissue. These tumors can be benign or malignant, called cancer. Most thyroid tumors are benign and do not pose a life threat to the patient. However, a small percentage may be malignant and require more rigorous treatment.
Types of thyroid tumors
Thyroid tumors can be divided into the following main types:
1. Nodular thyroid tumor: This is the most common type of thyroid tumor and is usually the result of single or multiple thyroid nodules. Most nodular thyroid tumors are benign.
2. Follicular adenocarcinoma: This is the most common type of thyroid cancer. Although it usually grows slowly, it still requires treatment to prevent further spread.
3. Medullary thyroid cancer: This is a rarer but more aggressive type of thyroid cancer.
4. Anaplastic thyroid cancer: This is the rarest form of thyroid cancer and the most aggressive type.
Symptoms and diagnosis
Thyroid tumors usually cause no obvious symptoms in their early stages and are therefore often discovered already large. Some common symptoms include enlargement of the thyroid gland, throat discomfort, difficulty swallowing, voice changes, and a lump in the neck. To diagnose thyroid tumors, doctors usually perform a series of tests, including an ultrasound, a fine-needle aspiration (FNAC), a thyroid scan, and blood tests.
Treatment options
The method of treating thyroid tumors depends on the type and degree of malignancy of the tumor. Benign tumors usually require only surveillance and not aggressive treatment. Malignant tumors may require surgical removal, radiation therapy, and/or radioactive iodine treatment to stop their spread.
