What are the symptoms of precancerous defects in the oral cavity

August 22, 2023

Oral precancerous defects refer to abnormal changes in the oral mucosa, which may be precursors to oral cancer. Although the signs of precancerous defects in the oral cavity vary from individual to individual, here are some possible symptoms:

33

1. Ulcers and pain: Precancerous oral defects often manifest as persistent non-healing oral ulcers. These ulcers may be painful and are not affected by regular canker sore treatments.

2. Color change: The color of normal oral mucosa should be pink or light red. Precancerous defects in the oral cavity may cause local color changes, appearing as white spots, erythema, or dark brown spots.

3. Discomfort: Precancerous oral defects are usually accompanied by discomfort, and patients may feel burning, stinging, or foreign body sensation.

4. Deformation and swelling: Precancerous oral defects can cause abnormal deformation and swelling of oral tissues. This may form irregular lumps or thick patches on the oral mucosa.

5. Bleeding: Precancerous oral defects may cause abnormal bleeding from the oral mucosa, especially when brushing teeth or eating.

6. Radiating symptoms of pain: Sometimes, precancerous defects in the oral cavity may cause pain in the head and neck, including the ears and neck. These pains may be an external manifestation of symptoms.

7. Dysphagia: In some cases, precancerous defects in the oral cavity may cause dysphagia because abnormal changes may extend into the oropharynx.

8. Duration: It is important to note that precancerous defects in the oral cavity usually do not disappear on their own within a few weeks but persist. If you notice any unusual symptoms in your mouth for more than two weeks, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible.

It should be emphasized that the symptoms of oral precancerous defects may be similar to other oral problems, so it is best to seek professional advice and diagnosis as soon as possible when suspected symptoms occur. Early detection and treatment are critical to oral cancer prevention and treatment, as oral cancers generally have better cure rates in their early stages.
