What are the methods of colorectal cancer screening

August 15, 2023

About 75% of colorectal cancers can occur in the general population. At present, all guidelines recommend that this population be screened for colorectal cancer after the age of 50. There are generally five methods:

3-221104160R0162

1 fecal occult blood test (fecaloc-cultbloodtest, FOBT).

2 flexible sigmoidoscopy (flexiblesigmoidoscopy, FS).

3FOBT combined with FS check.

4 double contrast barium radiography (doublecontrastbariumenema, DCBE).

5Total colonoscopy.

The screening programs of the three major agencies in the United States for the general population are as follows.

Federal Colorectal Cancer collaboration Group:

(1) complete colonoscopy every 10 years;

2 FOBT once a year.

3 FS; once every 5 years.

4 FOBT once a year plus FS once every 5 years.

(5) DCBE once every 5 years.

No specific preference is specified.

ASGE:

1 total colonoscopy once every 10 years is the standard scheme.

2 FOBT once a year, FS once every 5 years, FOBT once a year plus FS once every 5 years, all of them can be used as alternatives.

NCCN:

1 total colonoscopy once every 10 years is the standard scheme.

2 FOBT once a year plus FS once every 5 years or DCBE once every 5 years as an alternative.
